On 29 October 2024, the Firm’s Partner, Jeremiah Rais, conducted an online seminar titled "An Introduction to Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Laws in Malaysia", hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee.
Jeremiah began the session by exploring the history of digital currencies and blockchain technology, providing insights into their key characteristics and foundational concepts.
The session then delved into the legal frameworks governing digital currencies in both the United States and Malaysia. Jeremiah highlighted Malaysia’s Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 and elaborated on its relevant provisions. He also examined the Securities Commission’s Guidelines on Recognised Markets and Guidelines on Digital Assets, highlighting their essential features and regulatory significance.
Finally, Jeremiah addressed the anti-money laundering framework for digital currencies in Malaysia. This included a discussion on anti-money laundering preventive measures, customer due diligence, and reporting requirements.
