From the 25th to the 28th of February 2024, our Managing Partner, Mr Steven Thiru along with our Senior Associate, Mr. Ananthan Moorthi, attended the Borneo Rainforest Law Conference 2024 jointly organized by the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) and Sabah Law Society.
Held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the conference placed climate justice and rule of law at the forefront of the agenda, offering a unique platform to explore perspectives from a diverse and experienced pan-Commonwealth speaking faculty. Esteemed lawyers from Commonwealth countries discussed various legal issues facing their respective nations and emphasized the necessity for countries to align their laws and approaches to meet the challenges of climate change.
As council member of the CLA and Vice President of LAWASIA, Mr. Steven Thiru addressed the Opening Ceremony of the conference. Additionally, he was also invited as a panellist for two sessions: ‘Native Title – Recent Case Law Across the Commonwealth’ and the ‘Young Lawyers After Hours Mentoring Session’.
The conference concluded with the Sabah Declaration on Climate Justice – A 10-point declaration calling for climate climate-vulnerable groups, particularly children, youth, women and Indigenous peoples, to be empowered to assert their rights and participate actively and effectively in decision-making processes that shape climate action.
